Did you know that 95% of Australians use Google when searching?
Talk about market dominance! Google is the envy of Bing and Yahoo who get 4% and 1% respectively and it doesn’t look like this market share is going to change any time soon. Google have earnt their position by being excellent at what they do – providing relevant search results.
They do this by factoring in over 200 elements into an algorithm. Some of these factors are well known, like making your pages crawl-able, having relevant keywords in text and titles, usability, site speed and many more while other factors are secret. The algorithms also change on a semi regular basis as Google adapts to the flood of search data that constantly flows in.
Google highly recommends Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) because white hat, or ethical SEO, helps the search engines find the most relevant site for searchers. There is a myth that Google considers SEO to be spam and Matt Cutts the engineer spokesperson for Google SEO dismisses this myth:
SEO is not spam. SEO can be enormously useful. SEO can be abused and be enormously overdone but it’s important to realise that search engine optimisation can be a valid way to help people find what they’re looking for via search engines.
